The Charles Schulz Philosophy

My aunt forwarded this mail to me today, and I find it interesting and worth sharing with everyone. =)

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schulz, the creator of the ‘Peanuts’ comic strip.
You don’t have to actually answer the questions. Just read the e-mail straight through, and you’ll get the point.
1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America pageant.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?
The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields.
But the applause dies..
Awards tarnish.
Achievements are forgotten.
Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:
1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special!!
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson:
The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards.
They simply are the ones who care the most.

Pass this on to those people who have made a difference in your life, like I did.
‘Don’t worry about the world coming to an end today. It’s already tomorrow in Australia!’

Note: Pictures taken from The Official Peanuts Website. According to snopes.com, the above did not originate from Charles Schulz but still I think it’s worth reading nonetheless. Hehe…

On a more serious note…

Concrete Angel, by Martina McBride

The main theme of the song is child abuse. The song tells a story about a little girl who’s trying to deal with abuse from her alcoholic mother. Ultimately, the little girl is killed when her mother beats her to death in a drunken rage.

In the video, the girl befriendeds a little boy. Whenever this boy comes around, the girl smiles and forgets all her troubles. At the end of the video, it turns out that the boy is actually an angel meeting her just before her own death. He finds her at her grave, hugs her, and they run to meet another group of children who seem to have also died of child abuse, just like the girl.

On October 11, 2006 the United Nations (UN) released the first UN Secretary-General’s Study on Violence Against Children, stating that

  • Almost 53,000 children died worldwide in 2002 as a result of homicide.
  • Up to 80 to 98% of children suffer physical punishment in their homes, with a third or more experiencing severe physical punishment resulting from the use of implements.
  • An estimated 150 million girls and 73 million boys under 18 experienced forced sexual intercourse or other forms of sexual violence during 2002.
  • Between 100 and 140 million girls and women in the world have undergone some form of female genital mutilation/cutting.
  • In 2004, 218 million children were involved in child labour, of whom 126 million were in hazardous work.
  • Estimates from 2000 suggest that 1.8 million children were forced into prostitution and pornography, and 1.2 million were victims of trafficking.
  • Child abuse happens everywhere in the world. It might be happening to someone close to you. Should you ignore it? Or should you do something about it?

    Jack and Jill went up the hill

    Jack and Jill went up the hill
    To fetch a pail of water;
    Jack fell down and broke his crown
    And Jill came tumbling after.

    Up got Jack and home did trot
    As fast as he could caper;
    And went to bed and covered his head
    In vinegar and brown paper.

    Well Jill came in how she did grin
    To see Jack’s paper plaster;
    Mother vexed, did whip her next,
    For causing Jack’s disaster.

    Now Jack did laugh and Jill did cry
    But her tears did soon abate;
    Then Jill did say that they should play
    At see-saw across the gate.

    Note: Ever smacked yourself on the head for remembering only the first two lines of nursery rhymes? =)

    The origins of this poem lies in the belief that Jack and Jill are the 18th century Louis XVI of France, who was deposed and beheaded (lost his crown), and his Queen, Marie Antoinette (who came tumbling after). The words and lyrics were made more palatable for the nursery by giving it a happy ending.

    Thank You!!!

    The Young Visionaries and the children from Agathians Shelter would like to specifically thank: Kevin, his mum (Mrs Mok), and her friend (Mdm Sit) for donating daily supplies (ie rice, oil, eggs, snacks, milo, bee hoon, and biscuits) to Agathians Shelter last Saturday.

    Bags and bags were unloaded from their car and we kinda lost count on how much they supplied. But one thing we know, they are people with big big hearts.

    Just in case you guys are wondering who Kevin is (well it’s because you have not participated enough in our activities to know him, hint hint), here’s a video for you guys to see.

    This, is Kevin. Hee Hee…

    Thanks again to all of them for their kind contribution.

    Note: If you have things you wanna donate to any of the orphanages/homes/shelters under our initiative (read: If you have something… ), you are most welcome to do so. Just tell us in advance so that we can help you notify them. =)

    If you have something…

    Have you seen the Petronas advertisement for Chinese New Year 2008??
