Our final final final activity

And finally, this is the our video for Agathians Shelter (edited)!!!!

For our last activity, we recycled those unused boards from Career Path 08, coupled with some pictures we developed, and also colour pencils and marker pens and voila!!!

From this…

…to finally this!!!

And who dare say that we aren’t artistic!!!

*Beaming with pride*

Look look look!!! It’s FOUR boards total!!!

Our family picture

After that, knowing that it’s the last time we are gonna be there for this term, we bid farewell to every children in the shelter, took one last glance at the orphanage, and left, knowing that it won’t be long before we come back for more activities.

We love the Agathians, and all the other kids from Trinity and Assunta whom we have come to know, and care for in these few months’ time.  =)

Young Visionaries 2007/2008

That’s all for today!!!

Trinity Children Centre

Yep, this is the video played during our closing ceremony at Trinity Children Centre, edited to include a recap of the last day we spent there.

We requested for a performance from the kids on that very day, and to our delight they really did perform something for us!!!

Supervised by Miss Wendy, they sang while some played the instruments as accompaniment.  (Hugs~)

And if you’re just too lazy to watch the videos above, here’s a clear picture of what else we did on that day itself.

Thanks to Ruth who joined us that day, and also to Kok Mun who so kind-heartedly lent us his camera.

 =)

Editor: On another note, who’s coming next Tuesday? Lookout for our next post to find out!!!! Hehehe…

The Trip to Petrosains

It is a story of struggle and endurance. Oh not quite, but almost that bad.

……………………

OK that’s just to capture your attention. Worked didn’t it? Haha…

Anyway, the day really started off with obstacles.

We were scheduled to leave the orphanages by a certain time, but one couldn’t leave as planned due to schedulling conflicts.

Bus drivers were certainly not happy with the delay, as they needed to be at some other places for another job.

We waited, scared and anxious that our whole plan is ruined.

But thankfully we reached the destination almost on time, albeit slightly delayed and we were bracing ourselves for a fun and joyful rollar coaster ride!

We started off with a dark ride, anticipating the unknown, and landed in a land that promises endless fun and suprises. We breezed through the dinosaur periods (roar), then exploration of chemicals before we reached a helicopter simulator.

Kids were running everywhere. Oh no, we needed to control the crowd.

That’s when we set checkpoints. First up, the exit to the helicopter simulator.

All kids still here. Phew. Into the helicopter we went!! We flew across the South China Sea and landed at the oil platform.

Then we proceeded to the F1 car simulator, where everyone learned about the ins and outs of car racing, and went down the sliding tube (weeeee~).

We were getting mentally tired but the kids were still as excited as ever, and they were enthusiastic with everything they see.

Checkpoint 2 – Science Station 3, and the kids learned about basic principles of sciences (inertia, gravity, etc.. ) before they proceeded to the next station via a single pathway.

Then, photo sessions available for print! Boy the kids were surely having a blast, even with the mirrors. Everyone took photos despite the long queue since one of the machines broke down (yes, yet another obstacle).

Checkpoint 3 – before the exit through the dark ride.

Oh thank god it’s finished. But wait, the buses weren’t here!!!

So we stalled, and stalled. And then we received news that the Agathians hafta be back by 7pm for a performance.

Time was running short, and when we were out, because of the regulations inside Petrosains, we realized that we did not have any pictures taken (gasp!!). The only camera we had died on us, and Alie was the only one who had something that takes pictures.

Pictures turned out horrendous anyway because of the lighting.

Well but, by the end of the day, we saw the kids smiling and skipping two steps at a time while they walked, and thought that with all the setbacks and hollas it was all worth it.

A day well spent, with everyone satisfied with the outcome. It was an opportunity to have fun with Science, an exploration into one’s personal interests.

We hope to be looking at future astrologists, biotechnologists, pharmacists and researchers among these 71 children. Anything to do with science!

It’s been a challenging task to have a trip with 71 children, but a more challenging task to end it beautifully.

Credits to AIESEC UM for funding the tickets. Thank you also to Lay Geen, Robin, Feli, Rita, Kevin, Meng Lin, Rohene, and to all the caretakers of Agathians Shelter, Trinity Children Centre, and Assunta Children’s Society for helping out on that day. We would have died without you guys. Haha…

It was an exhausting day for us, but memorable nonetheless.

=)

Note: If you still wanna see those handful of horrendous pictures we took that day, brace yourself, and click here. You have been forewarned.

Those good ol’ days..

In the midst of all the Nintendos and PSPs, we sometimes forget about the simple pleasures in life. Remember how we used to have loads of fun playing with sticks, stones and rubber bands?

Thus, the previous week’s activity was a homage to the good ol’ days; the games that all of us used to play (with our own set of rules, I might add!) almost every day in school, in our neighbourhoods, in our homes!

The boys at Agathians, being their usual active selves, warmed up with a game of football, a game that has been around for many centuries..Boys will be boys indeed!

Kick off!

And then we played Blind Man’s Bluff..(Where the person being blindfolded had to guess who’s the person that he has gotten hold of. If he’s right, the person who was caught had to be the ‘blind man’ instead.) The boys were so excited over the prospect of running around in a world of darkness that they willingly let themselves be caught.

Which made the game all the more interesting. Haha…

Me!Me!

Windows to the World was about Sweden!

We solved jigsaw puzzles of the Swedish flag..

Voila!

Group pictures!

After which we had a short learn-to-speak-Swedish session and some Swedish snacks afterwards. =)

Some random shots..

Over at Assunta on Sunday, we had a game called Bola Kaki Tiga which involved 3 slippers, 2 balls, 2 groups and a lot of laughter! (Though we modified it a lil’ and replaced slippers with bottles instead!)

All sweaty and tired from all the running and shouting, ice-cream was a welcome break..

Then it was time for indoor games – Congkak, Batu Seremban, Bottle Caps galore!

We played the ever-famous A-E-I-O-U, which was a blast with Nisha’s antics which made it hard for everyone to maintain a straight face..

Since it was Mother’s Day and all, we squeezed in a session of card-making..

It was a sweet blast to the past! A bit nostalgic at times too, remembering all the games we used to play not too long ago..=)

Sometimes, old is indeed gold.

Note: Special thanks to Feli, Rita, Hon Keong and Yee Shan for joining us last week! Click here for more pictures on our previous activity.

Learning English the Fun Way

This is waaaaay overdue, but here’s a recap of what we did at Agathians Shelter and Trinity Children Centre two weeks ago.

Special thanks to Goay Imm, Ruben and Feli for helping out during that weekend.

Of Sports Day, Square Dancing and Volunteering

Last Saturday was Bukit Bintang School’s Sports Day! Most of the boys in Agathians Shelter were involved and thus we bundled the rest of them and trooped over to the school field to join in the fun! Needless to say, we cheered and shouted till we were hoarse…

Scenes like this must have brought back a LOT of memories..

It was a pleasant surprise to see the children from Trinity at the field as well. We must have looked a bit mad, waving ecstatically and shouting names..oh well!

The boys at Agathians proved to be a sporty lot when they brought home so many medals. Three cheers for our young heroes!

Stefan and Ayumi couldn’t resist joining in the fun and they signed up for the Parent-Teacher Event.

For Stefan, it was the tug-of-war event..

He pulled…

and pulled..

and he won! WOOHOOO!

Sweet Ayumi on the other hand, went round..

and round… and round..

…and though she didn’t win the musical chairs event, but kudos for being such a sport! (on sports day, coincidentally..hehe)

The day didn’t end there though.. we had a square dance session back home.. and now its on YouTube! HaHa!

Where we danced like penguins

And finished with our favourite Cotton-Eye Joe!!!

While on Sunday, several of us volunteered at the Assumption Church, PJ to help Assunta Children’s Society to distribute flyers and collect donations in aid of their new building (as the current one is in pretty bad shape). They are selling bricks, and each costs RM20. Nonetheless, any amount is welcome.

If you wish to help, feel free to contact us and we will inform you on the relevant details..

Hope to see you again soon! =)

Note : Special thanks to Feli, Foo Cheong, Stephanie, Boon Boon, Melvin, Conrad, Alif and Lia who joined us last weekend!

Yih Kai : 好看!

THANK YOU CinemaOnline for the free tickets~

We would also like to thank Alex and his wife for providing transport for the kids.

These special chances are rare, and precious indeed.

Indoor Games vs Outdoor Games : A Recap

It was raining cats and dogs on Saturday when we arrived at Agathians Shelter with candies in a shoe box, chocolates, and some old newspapers.

Upon reaching, we were greeted by the kids who were busy drawing pictures of Fantastic Four, Ghost Rider and even penguins and thus, we helped them out. Some kids were asking for spelling tests and we were happy to oblige as well.

fantastic_four_poster.jpg

Then, we proceeded to play games such as scavenger hunt, statue dance (where you dance until the music stops and you hafta freeze, whoever moves loses), and also ‘pass the box’ (where the shoe box is passed around when the music plays, and when it stops whoever’s holding the box hafta perform a ’stunt’). After all the games, the candies in the shoe box were revealed and distributed to everybody.

Then there were also some side activities. Hari was learning Mathematics from Wen Yan & Boon Hui, while on the other hand a world map was being set up by May Yee with the help of a few kids, with the names of past and present interns pinned to their countries.

numbersandquestions.jpg

Due to the fact that May Yee’s camera died off before we even started our activity, there aren’t many pictures to be posted on Saturday’s activity.

So of course we’ve learnt our lesson and brought extra cameras on Sunday’s activity at Trinity Children Centre. Unlike the day before, we had fun under the sun!!!

We started with ‘the ping pong ball game’ where kids have to balance a ping pong ball on a spoon, pick up a soaked sponge along the way, and fill up a bottle with water from the sponge (it sounds complicated, but really entertaining). Then we had a three-legged race, a balloon popping game and lastly ‘guess the act’ (where you perform actions for your teammates to guess).

Highlights of the day

Sim Mei explaining rules of the ping pong ball game for the third time (It’s hard!!!)

Our next agenda : Movie Watching with the Kids. Stay tuned for more updates!!!

Note: Our kind volunteers for the weekend were Feli, Foo Cheong, Raj, Sasi, Rashid, Ming Ching, and Kent. Click here for more pictures of our activities. Wttw was about Spain this week.

Adiós amigos~

Of McDonalds and Whiteboards

So what have we been up to, I hear you ask?

We’ve had plenty up our sleeves!

Thanks to McDonalds, who were gracious enough to sponsor food for the children at Agathians Shelter,  our Luncheon with the Kids event went without a hitch. Before the long-awaited lunch though, we had a game of football which was filled with a lot of screams, laughter, shouts and excitement (not to mention a lot of cheerleading from the spectators….*GOAL!!)

A bit of strategy-planning going on before the first whistle..
